NCOC places the utmost importance on safety and environmental responsibility.  The consortium is determined to develop a world-class project that is designed and operated to high environmental and safety standards, in full compliance with the laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Since the original Consortium was established in 1993, a number of extensive onshore and offshore environmental programmes have been carried out.  For example, local companies were employed by Agip KCO to produce Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) of its operations, including the offshore and onshore facilities, trunk lines and the onshore export pipelines; a programme has been initiated to provide funding for biodiversity research projects in the Caspian region; twenty air quality monitoring stations have been installed in the Atyrau oblast; and annual soil surveys and bird and seal population studies are run.  In 2008 a North Caspian environmental sensitivity map was published, which incorporates much of the scientific data collected by the consortium.
